Making the grade learning adventures for your family

I am thumbing through "Making the Grade 5-6" and inside this book it says,

"Your Child is a unique blend of different intelligences----and so are you. Your own interests and ways of learning will inevitably have an influence on the kinds of activities that you can and want to do with your kid. Not suprisingly, it will probably be easiest to encourage the kinds of activities and approches that you yourself are most comfortable with....................."

I thought that it was interesting and it has given me some reminders. There are also some other really good quotes that this book has.

I really enjoyed "Duma Key" by Stephen King. He's been a favorite of mine since junior high. Most of his recent books aren't so much horror as mildly supernatural, well-written fiction.

I'm in the middle of "The Greedy Bastard Diary, A Comic Tour of America" by Eric Idle. If you like Monty Python, you'll know who he is. I don't always agree with him, but he's got me laughing out loud most of the time.

OK, I'm most of the way through the Eric Idle and I think I'm changing my mind about it. It's still pretty funny in parts, but I'm getting awfully weary of his name-dropping. It's all, "When I was vacationing in the Caribbean with Paul Simon," and "When Robin Williams, Michael J. Fox and I were in the final pace car at the Tour de France," etc. It's getting old. OK, I wrote up a review of "The Greedy Bastard Diary" for another site once I finished it, and I thought I'd post it here, too (since I brought it up and all.)

*****

I have to admit, I grabbed this book off the shelf because I wanted to know why it had "bastard" in the title. Forgive me, I am still a juvenile in many ways... He explains that a greedy bastard tour is a rock and roll term, for when you go out on a bare bones concert tour with as few band members and roadies as possible, so that you can keep more of the money. Now you know, feel free to use it in conversation.

Anyway, this book is part travel diary, and part memoir. He tells his experiences as he is touring America with a small comedy troupe, but nearly every day he writes about his life. He tells about losing his dad, growing up in a strict boarding school, and his relationship with Beatle George Harrison.

There are times when this book is laugh out loud hilarious, which I expected. But, it's very poignant as well, which was a surprise to me.

Warning: There are naughty bits, I wouldn't let the kids read it. And he does a LOT of name-dropping. He seems to have met every single famous person EVER, and he mentions them all at one time or another.

Other than that, I think this book was great! A quick and funny read, but deep and sweet as well.
