This award winning play will be performed from November 14-December 20, 2008. The Denver Center Theatre Company is plannig an expanded series of special matinees for student groups. I would like to gauge interest in order to contact the group sales department and set up a group rate for a student matinee. Special study materials will also be available.
I know it is summer and we are busy with summer fun, but I'd like some sort of head count ASAP. This play is for children 6 and older, and they are not admitting any child under 6 years of age.
Please feel free to cross-post to other groups.
Thanks!

Draw a diagram of the city government. Label each office and describe it's duties. Discuss ideas for improvement and how are new laws made.
Discuss the rights and responsibilities of an invididual in his/her community, stae and country. Have your child write a statement of commitment for being a responsible citizen in the community. Have your child write a thank you note to the community leader.
Compare and contrast your city government to the state government.
Make a poster about your state's capital. Write the name of the capital in outlined letters and fill in the letters with words and pictures.

-Have your child make a list of questions prior to the visit. -Write a thank you note.
Before your visit: Check out this lesson plan! http://www.nationalgeographic.com/xpeditions/lessons/07/g35/earth.html
This is another neat lesson plan. http://school.discoveryeducation.com/lessonplans/programs/weathermaps/
Reading weather maps http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/maps/home.rxml
Save newspaper weather maps from several days. (I'll ask my neighbor, or use the ones at the library!) You can also find them online. http://weathernow.denverpost.com/hw3.php
Write the date on each map. Compare the accuracy of the information with the actual day. Have your child take the temperature for the day, and make a line graph. Watch a televised weather report and compare and contrast it with that day's newspaper weather report. Discuss the similarities and differences in the information and the means of reporting it. When you are done you can create your own weather map , draw diagrams explaining cold fronts and warm fronts.

The newspaper looks good online! It's been a nice writing outlet for us. Writers sometimes need a due date so answering to a date with a group has proved positive for us. The newspaper is open to any home school-kid.I invite you to join the fun.

The sections for both Westside Tweens and CDHG take you to weird places in yahoogroups where you can't actually access the group. The CDHG one says the group doesn't exist, and all you get at the other is a bold message telling you that you aren't a member and can't access the group, with no buttons to try to join or anything.

I am just passing along this great book recomendation:
We just finished reading this book as our family Audio-Book Choice. I ordered four copies of the book (from the library along with the Book on CD) so we all could follow along and enjoy the more than 300 drawings in the book. The Audio-Book is a real treat in entertainment!
It is an appealing work of fiction that I thought might appeal to your child. 2008 Medal Winner Caldecott Winner
The 2008 Caldecott Medal winner is The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic) From an opening shot of the full moon setting over an awakening Paris in 1931, this tale casts a new light on the picture book form. Hugo is a young orphan secretly living in the walls of a train station where he labors to complete a mysterious invention left by his father. In a work of more than 500 pages, the suspenseful text and wordless double-page spreads narrate the tale in turns. Neither words nor pictures alone tell this story, which is filled with cinematic intrigue. Black & white pencil illustrations evoke the flickering images of the silent films to which the book pays homage.

I would like to add my 2 cents! My kids have also been participating in this school for the past school year. Andrew has been in the Core class (0-8) and Alanna has been in the Love of Learning class (9-12). It should be noted that the ages are loosely followed as the Thomas Jefferson style is to be directed by the kids interests, especially in the younger ages. The younger classes do work differently than the scholar age classes as there is no set curriculum. This has proven to be a challenge at times for the mentors to try and keep up with all the kids and their varying interests. It has also been a lesson to the kids at times that, because this is a group situation, they will not get to do exactly what they want exactly when they want to. A minor correction on the scholar classes that will be offered next year. For new students there will be a class following the Uncle Eric series (Whatever Happened to Penny Candy and Whatever Happened to Justice) for half the year with science the other half. There will also be a Shakespeare class offered. Although, I can't speak for the scholar kids, I can tell you that my kids have been thrilled with the experience and are looking forward to next year.

Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America
The free exhibit will immerse visitors in Lincoln's story through images, artifacts, and videos, all fully contained in a custom 53- foot-long trailer parked, appropriately, along Lincoln Avenue.
The exhibit will be open to the public for just three more days during the following times: Friday, May 2, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 4, noon to 5 p.m.
No tickets are necessary. Admission will be handled on a first come, first served basis.
Denver is the first stop on the exhibit's two-year national tour. The mobile exhibition was developed by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, to commemorate the Lincoln Bicentennial.
As a reminder, because of the Cinco de Mayo activities in Civic Center Park, May 3 to 4, visitors are encouraged to park in the Cultural Center Parking Garage at 12th and Broadway, or at the meters and paid lots, south of the museum. Note that fees are charged in the Parking Garage.

We have been using this for a few months now, and it is working well. It's a monthly fee, cancel anytime program that includes Math, Language Arts, Social Studies & Science. Very user/parent friendly and adjustable to the student's learning level. For example, my daughter has struggled with math, so she is on a lower level for that subject-and the higher levels for the rest of the subjects. I was able to adjust that right on the website.

It's $19.95 (per student) and if you are planning on a break (a couple months in summer, for instance), they will keep the account open for a reduced fee. I like that it is month-to-month (no yearly tuition-cancel anytime), adjustable to level in each subject, user friendly and-most of all-works for Tabitha.
