Clara BrownBlack American West Museum

Founded in 1971 by Paul W. Stewart, the Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving and disseminating the contributions of Blacks in the Old West.

While famous for telling the story of Black cowboys, we are broader than this with interests in the stories of all those early Blacks who came west and performed as miners, soldiers, homesteaders, ranchers, blacksmiths, schoolteachers, lawmen, and every other profession needed to build up the West. In fact, the Museum itself is in the home of Dr. Justina Ford, Colorado's first Black woman doctor!

Grace Stiles retired after 30+ years in the Denver Public Schools. She created this museum in an old house in Five Points, and it's just CRAMMED full of stuff! She gives excellent programs, and does well with groups of different ages, which isn't always true. Definitely worth a trip!

This was one of the places we went where we were happily surprised. It really looked like it was going to be a good trip, and it turned out to be a GREAT trip!

Grace Stiles dressed up as Madame C.J. Walker, and told her life experience from Madame Walker's point of view. The kids were FASCINATED as she washed clothes in a basin, and told about building a mansion near the Rockefeller home.

One warning: It was a little difficult to schedule our field trip with her. She's not the easiest person to reach. So, if you're thinking of going, this won't be a trip you can decide on today and take a crowd of kids down on Friday. But, any work you put in will be totally worth it!

She also does Kwanzaa programs, but we had too many kids to go. When she gets them scheduled you can go as individual families, though. Just mentioning that as something else to look for.

This is another really neat field trip opportunity. Their art changes out pretty quickly, so even if you've been recently you can go again and see something new.

The best part of this museum, in my opinion, is the wide variety of classes for kids. We've made Aztec masks, learned about the Mayan calendar, and decorated Sugar Skulls there for Dia le los Muertos. All were fairly inexpensive, and my kids (who are on the picky side) liked them all!

Another cool thing is that most everyone who works or volunteers there is a native Spanish speaker, and they're pretty kind about letting you "practice" on them! My espanol is might rusty, but they're all pretty willing to work with me, and that's a pretty cool side benefit in my eyes. :-)
