I received this e-mail about the Thursday Options school at Orchard & I25. It sounds like a wonderful enrichment program but is in danger of being canceled because of too low of enrollment. I know many of the classes are combined (this girls would be in the 3&4th grade class) and the class size is still small.
Hello to all you registered and prospective Options families! My name is Sue Russell. This summer I have been training under Renee Rodriguez to be full time coordinator for the Thursday Options site at Orchard Road and I-25. I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and am less than a year away from completing my Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction. I homeschooled my two sons from 1990 to 2006. We participated in the Options program during their 8th grade and high school years, and I taught science and geography for Options for three years. |

I would like to add my 2 cents! My kids have also been participating in this school for the past school year. Andrew has been in the Core class (0-8) and Alanna has been in the Love of Learning class (9-12). It should be noted that the ages are loosely followed as the Thomas Jefferson style is to be directed by the kids interests, especially in the younger ages.
The younger classes do work differently than the scholar age classes as there is no set curriculum. This has proven to be a challenge at times for the mentors to try and keep up with all the kids and their varying interests. It has also been a lesson to the kids at times that, because this is a group situation, they will not get to do exactly what they want exactly when they want to. A minor correction on the scholar classes that will be offered next year. For new students there will be a class following the Uncle Eric series (Whatever Happened to Penny Candy and Whatever Happened to Justice) for half the year with science the other half. There will also be a Shakespeare class offered. Although, I can't speak for the scholar kids, I can tell you that my kids have been thrilled with the experience and are looking forward to next year. |
