| Start out: Glenarm and 16th street. This is the Denver Pavilions. Denver Pavilions 500 16th street -1998 This was built in 1998. They were careful to use the old style roof moldings and brick and tone facades. *Does any one know why? ??? -They blend in with the surrounding buildings. *It was funded by mostly tax dollars so they had to devote 1% of the total cost to public art. There is a great wall, can any one find it? Hint it is 360 feet long and 30 feet high. -(It is the word DENVER, spelled out across a perforated metal screen, backed by computerized light shows.) |
| Hop on the bus, go down 2 blocks to California. Hayden, Dickinson and Feldhauser 1609 California St. -1891 -Does any one notice something unique about this building? (Could probably look at the side to get a hint!) *This building is to believed to be the only remaining building in the city retaining its full cast iron front. The cast Iron design was one of the most important innovations for the design of commercial architecture in the 19th century. Cast iron could hold up the weight of a building, cast iron could also be molded to create elaborate ornate designs, resembling more expensive fronts of a hand carved stone. This process was much less expensive since one wooden mold could create several castings. The end product would hold up better than some elements than wood or stone! |
| Hop on the bus and go down 4 blocks to Arapahoe. D&F Tower 1101 16th street- 1909 This is considered one of downtown Denver*s most famous landmarks, this 372 foot tall tower, inspired by the bell tower in St. Marks*s Square in Venice, was erected by William Cooke Daniels. When completed it was the highest building west of the Mississippi and remained so until the 1950*s. it was the third-highest building in the nation, topped only by two Manhattan skyscrapers -It used to be a department store called May D&F. The department store was knocked down and the tower remained. Can any one find where it was attached to the department store? *The west side of the tower shows the scar where it was joined to the department store. -How big are the hands on the tower? *6 feet! |
| *****We were able to do this stop. You will have to email and set up a time.****** If this is something that can not happen I have all the information that Susan was able to give us attached here:
|
| If time allows than we will walk to the corner of 14th, view down towards Wynkoop Street here we will be able to see the Bridge. Wynkoop Street railroad Bridge- 1908 Early settlers to the Denver area learned the hard way that looks can be deceiving. Cherry Creek, usually no more than a trickle, flooded six times between 1864 and 1965 wiping out all of the bridges crossing its path. After the 1885 flood the creek was canalled and walled and bridges built after this time were made of iron and steel, instead of wood pallet construction. Now a pedestrian bridge, the Wynkoop bridge is one of only seven left from this era. |
| Walk back down to 16th street, hop on the bus to the end. (4 blocks) Stand at the end of 16th street -Where is the Millennium Bridge? -2002 *This footbridge connects downtown with the Central Platte Valley. The 130 foot long bridge spans the Consolidated Main Line railroad tracks. The Bridge is a cable suspension design. It was especially created to allow the lowest rise possible for pedestrians to scale and yet still give clearance for the railroad. The mast of the bridge is 200 feet high, it was designed to look like the mast of a sailboat, the 80 foot wide deck is lit at night, making it a visible part of Downtown’s nighttime skyline. -Where is the home of the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Nuggets and a new team called the ? (Denver Crush) -What is the name of the only Amusement park relocated from an outlining location to an Urban setting? |
| Union Station 1701 Wynkoop St. -1881 (303) 534-1012 gift shop # Call ahead of time to see if they are open. Whether you're going on a trip, or just want to pretend you are, Union Station is a great place to stop by. Originally built in 1880 as Union Depot, the train station burned down and was resurrected in 1914. The architecture is very impressive both inside and out. With its 64-foot high ceilings, and three story arched windows, it makes for a grand arrival or departure for anyone. Also, the basement houses one of the world's largest model railroad collections that is sure to engage any train lovers attention |
