The M generation
This is what researchers call this generation of kids 8-18 years old. The new advances in technology have had a tremendous increase just over the past five years. These advances have captured the interest of millions of American kids. It has saturated their daily lives to the point that it's the main hobby of many. A report taken on 8-18 year olds by the Kaiser Family Foundation sated, " on average 6.5 hours a day is spent with media," Across seven days of the week that time equaled the amount of a full time job. Aside from these 6.5 hours when full attention is not on media, kids are using a electronic-activated device while doing something else (ex. reading a magazine and listening to music on an IPOD) so really tweens and teens are exposed to 8.5 hours a day of media."

Did you know.............
By: Tabitha

That Columbus was not the first European to set foot in the "new world"?

Lelf Eriksson, a Viking, was. Him and his group came from Greenland by Sailing on ships that could be used with both sails and rowers when other ships could only be used with either sails or rowers, not both. They landed on an island They called Vinland that is now called Newfoundland. The Vikings left there a few years later but didn’t tell anybody about the land. Columbus wouldn’t sail for another 500 years.

DID YOU KNOW will be an ongoing series covering American History.

Spring
By: Sami

The afternoon sun shines on my
hair the afternoon wind blows my
hair everywhere the green leaves
newly fallen from the trees blown
all around swept up from ground
this is the magic that spring brings.
The Seasons.
By: Kyra

In the beginning of the year,
Spring is here,
Leaping around,
Are chirping birds,
When summer arrives,
There are more hives,
Now we’re at Autumn’s cold,
When the plants don’t hold,
When Winters here,
Snow is left till the end of the year,
Now you went all through,
And this is all very true.

The “Masters at Multitasking”
Continued

The kids of 2000 are masters at multitasking. They can be doing up to 5 things at one time. If all those five things are getting equal attention is a question.
Picture for a minute Jake in his room, its 6:30 pm and he has a lot of homework ahead of him. Right now he’s working on an essay for history. Jake is writing about the Civil War in the mist of text-messaging his friend, listening to music on his IPOD and surfing the Internet. Jake pictures an average tween (10-12yrs.) or teen’s daily “homework atmosphere.”
One report on CBS NEWS says, “Kids always study this way.” One-third of young people say they talk on the phone, IM, watch TV, listen to music or surf the web while doing their HW.

The Problems

As the facts clearly show media seems to be number 1 in the lives of most kids 8.5 hours a day youths are exposed to media. On the contrary only 2 ¼ hours are spent a day with parents, under one hour doing homework and ½ hour doing chores. No wonder then there is so many family problems, youth obesity, low grades in school and laziness today.
The kids that are least content in their lives or get the poorest grades spend more time with video games and less time reading then their peers. Also kids are not putting on more weight because they’re eating more but exercising less. Kids are trapped inside their houses where their parents feel it’s safer for them to be. Then because of this kids revert to the Internet for freedom, Danah Boyd, expert on social networking, researcher at Yahoo and UC Berkeley says: “Kids and teenagers have little freedom in the real world. It’s not like back in the day. They use to bike places on their own-now it’s all controlled and sanitized. The online world is the only place where they have freedom of expression and can really be on their own and be themselves.”

My Space
Pg. 3 ____________________________________________________________________________________

Continued:

My Space has become a popular site because tweens (10-12yrs) and tees are looking for their identity and this is where they can be who they want to be.

What you can do to help
These fact are not joyous indeed. You probably wonder how this problem can be helped. Parents spend more time with your kids. Teens tend to give off an impression of antisocialism, that they want to be left alone. But really they don’t, most of the time they are just bored. Teens are going through a lot in their lives now. They’re trying to find their identities and personality. Most of the time they need someone to talk to like their parents.
If you are a youth ask yourself, “What do I do with my extra time?” “Am I constantly on my cell phone or do I tune my parents out with my IPOD?” “Do I get enough exercise or am I constantly sitting in front of a TV screen? Why not consider signing up for a sport or getting out to walk around your neighborhood with your dog sometime. Always feel free to go to your parents and ask them to do something with you. Your parents can offer good companionship and help through your life.

We are the M generation

Doubtless, we are the media (M) generation. We are privileged to live in such a modern era and be the first kids this century’s technology is tested on. But we don’t have to be remembered in history as out-of-balanced. Balance in everything is the key. Like when you eat a meal you do not want to stuff yourself for you’ll get sick. So don’t stuff yourself with media all day long, every day, all month, all year or you’ll get “stuffed mentally” and fail in other things like school and your relationship with others especially your parents. So as this decade moves on, remember we want to be balanced in our use of electronics, not over exercising our convenience to technology!

I am a hole by far too large.
My friends used to be all the stars.
If I had hair it would be black.
Anything that falls in me is my snack.

TENA, TANA

Once there was a kitten, whose name was Tena, and her best friends name was Tana. They also lived with a kitten whose name was Taina. She loved sleeping. They played together so much that their paws got hot. One day their owner got a lava lamp. "What is it?" Tena said. "I... don't know," "Eeek," "Aaaa," Tana said "It's hot" Tena said. "Oooo!" they said as the lava went up. "I want one!" Tena said, "Me too!" Taina just slept. "What is that thing?" Taina said waking up. "We're not sure," Tena and Tana said. "It's hot!" Tena said.
